Life story

" Linda Heimstra, an artist, musician, and beloved member of the Rappahannock County community, died peacefully at her home near Sperryville, Virginia, on August 14, 2026, after living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). She was 72.

Linda was born on July 12, 1954, in Bermuda, the daughter of Fred Albert Heimstra and Thelma Pernette Gullickson. For approximately 30 years, she made her home in a beautiful and remote corner of the county near Shenandoah National Park and Old Rag Mountain. The natural landscape surrounding her home was an enduring source of inspiration, companionship, and creative energy.

A gifted visual artist, Linda brought imagination, color, and a distinctive artistic vision to everything she undertook. Most recently, she designed and led the creation of the community mural at Rappahannock County Park. The project invited people of different ages and backgrounds to make art together and stands as a lasting expression of Linda’s creativity, generosity, and belief in community.

Music was equally central to Linda’s life. A talented musician and spirited performer, she led her own band, The Nethers Hot Club. She was known for her smooth jazz voice and devoted bandmates.

Linda will be remembered for her fierce independence, originality, humor, and deep attachment to the place she called home. She lived creatively and on her own terms. Her artwork, music, friendships, and contributions to the community will continue to resonate with the many people whose lives she touched.

A gathering to celebrate Linda’s life will be held Sunday, October 25. Spreading of the ashes at 3 p.m., celebration at Blue Quartz Winery at 4:30. Friends are invited to bring photographs, stories, and memories to share.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rapp at Home or Hospice of the Piedmont, whose care and support helped make it possible for Linda to remain in the home and landscape she loved.
