Age 86

Life story

" Daniel Michael Day, 86, of Jeffersonton, Virginia, died unexpectedly on July 23, 2026, in Warrenton, Virginia.

Known to family and friends as Mike or “Bub,” he was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1939. Mike graduated from Lynn English High School in 1958 before serving six months in the United States Army. He went on to work for more than 25 years in the printing and graphic arts department at Parker Brothers, the iconic board game manufacturer in Salem and Beverly, Massachusetts, where he was a proud member of the company’s Quarter-Century Club.
Mike married Susanne (Collins) in 1968. They were married for nearly 30 years, and Mike became an important part of the lives of her children, Timothy and Cheryl, from an early age. Although Mike and Susanne eventually went their separate ways, they remained friends throughout their lives. Susanne continued to live in Massachusetts after Mike moved to Virginia. She died in 2020.
In 1997, Mike left Lynn for Virginia, where he lived with his son, Todd, and his future daughter-in-law, Kate. While in Virginia, he worked for Advantage Medical Equipment in Gainesville and later Warrenton before retiring in 2018. Mike was a classic, stoic New Englander. He loved a good laugh and giving people a hard time, in true Boston fashion. He typically said exactly what was on his mind and seldom noticed if he had said the wrong thing. Despite this—or perhaps because of it—he was beloved by many.
One of Mike’s greatest joys was watching his grandchildren play sports or perform. While in Massachusetts, he could often be found at Little League games or dance recitals. For the last several years, he was a fixture at Fauquier County Roller Hockey League games. Mike played golf for most of his adult life and, at times, was an avid racquetball player. He loved skiing and hiking in the White Mountains, climbing nearly all of New Hampshire’s 4,000-footers. He never went a week in his life without going to a gym for a workout or exercise class.

A diehard sports fan, Mike spent his life as an ardent supporter of Boston’s professional teams and later became a devoted Liverpool F.C. supporter. He took
great pleasure in watching his teams play, though you might not always have guessed it from his antics during a game. No matter how comfortable the lead, Mike remained convinced that his team could somehow find a way to lose, right up until the final whistle or out. Every mistake by his team was met with a complaint, a groan, or some other expression of displeasure. He didn’t quite yell at the television, but he certainly knew how to piss and moan his way through a game—a familiar and endearing part of watching sports with Mike. Over the past couple of decades, Molly’s Irish Pub in Warrenton became his local gathering spot—a place where he could grab a seat and catch up with a tight-knit group of friends.

Mike is survived by his children: stepson Timothy J. Osterfield of Saluda, South Carolina; stepdaughter Cheryl L. (Osterfield) Atkinson of Peabody, Massachusetts; and son Todd Michael Day and his wife, Kathryn Warman-Day, of Jeffersonton, Virginia. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Jason Osterfield, James Osterfield, Jillian (Atkinson) Warner, Wesley Atkinson, Bailey Atkinson, Makenzie Atkinson, and Fox Day, as well as four great-grandchildren. He is survived by two younger siblings, John “Jack” Day and Doreen (Day) Penczer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard Edward Day and Gladys L. (Mills) Day, and his brother, Thomas Day. Mike’s stepdaughter-in-law, Denise Osterfield, also died in July 2026.

For Fox, Mike was more than a grandfather. From the day Fox was born 11 years ago, the two shared a home and a remarkably close bond. They considered each other best friends. Todd and Kate feel incredibly lucky that Fox got to know his grandfather as well as he did, and it is this close bond that they know will preserve Bub’s memory long into the future.

Rather than a formal service, family and friends will be “Doing Something for Bub at the Pub” on what would have been his 87th birthday, Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Molly’s Irish Pub, 36 Main Street, Warrenton, Virginia. Friends are welcome between 5:00 and 8:30 p.m.

We hope to see many of you there. "
