Life story

" Leonard D. Mills, Jr., 86, of Amissville, VA went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 20, 2024. He was with his family at the time of his passing.
L.D. was born on October 26, 1937, in Leesburg, VA to the late Leonard D Mills, Sr. and Lorena Payne Mills. He grew up working on the farm with his father and enjoyed spending time with his cousins and classmates - pick up baseball games, racing fast cars, and was quite the prankster. L.D. enjoyed the outdoors - in his younger years he was an avid fisherman, enjoyed hunting wild turkey and deer, vegetable gardening, and took great pride in maintaining his yard. He was a leader of Boy Scout Troop 811 in Marshall for years, active with his son through Eagle Scout achievement. In his older years, he loved to watch birds and muse at butterflies; he was always a great lover of eagles. From his teens, he loved to drive and was the proud owner of many a fast car. His last pride and joy was his Ford Mustang Shelby GT 350. In later retirement, he loved to watch Gunsmoke, listen to Willie Nelson, and could never get enough of FOX news.
He enlisted in the Army in 1961 and was honorably discharged in 1967. Following his military discharge he worked for Trailways Bus Lines for many years, followed by work as a delivery driver for United Parcel Service and eventually as a Service Writer for multiple car dealerships in and around Warrenton and Winchester, VA until his retirement in 1999. Once he retired he continued to work as a professional driver, travelling long distance to exchange dealer cars for local car retailers until his early 70's.
L.D. is preceded in death by his parents Leonard D. Sr. and Lorena Payne Mills, his elder sister Nancy Mills Bradley, and his wife Janice Woods Mills. He is survived by his daughter Lisa Mills Springer, son Leonard D. Mills Ill and wife Theresa, grandchildren Britanni Nasuta, Abigail Springer, Peyton Springer, Johnathan Mills, and William Mills.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Marshall Baptist Church in Marshall, VA on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 2 pm. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service. Graveside Service will follow at Warrenton Cemetery in Warrenton, VA.
