Life story

" Jane Huffman passed on March 19, 2024 at her home in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Jane blazed her journey with love for her family and her hope for a better and kinder world. Her loyal and caring nature expressed itself in her commitment to her parents, grandparents, brothers, beloved nieces and grand nephew. She was also a committed and doting companion to her dog and many cats. The addition of a grand nephew brought her great joy near the end of her life. Jane faced life with clear-eyes and courage, and lived it in alignment with her convictions.

Jane had a relentless drive to better the world through high quality education. This expressed itself both professionally, and through her volunteer efforts. Jane was a Professor at Mary Washington University, in the College of Education. She had previously been a professor at UNC Pembroke, St. Andrews University, and Shaw University. She is a graduate of Blacksburg High School, Radford University and Virginia Tech. Her professional commitment extended beyond the classroom, as she served on a number of professional associations, advancing education. Early in her career, she taught government at Hanley High School in Winchester Virginia. Her lifelong interest in social studies, particularly history, lead her to volunteer at Ferry Farm and Kenmore in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Additionally, her strong convictions in democracy, good government and social justice expressed itself through her volunteer work with the Democratic Party, specifically through the Spotsy Dems and the Blue Action Network.

Jane will be dearly missed by family, friends and colleagues. She was proceeded in passing by her parents Stanley A. Huffman, Jr., and Doris Huffman, and she is survived by her brothers and sister-laws Stan & Rosie Huffman and Frank & Kelli Huffman, her nieces and their partners Allison & Mike Raymond and Jennifer Huffman & Fletcher Jones, and her grand nephew Luke Raymond.

A small family service will be held to honor Jane. Jane would encourage condolences in the form of a donation to your favorite animal welfare charity. "
