Life story

"Virginia Annette (Carter) Smith, 80, of Woodford, Virginia, born November 29, 1943 in Cedon, Virginia, passed away on Friday, January 5, 2024, at Fredericksburg Health and Rehab, Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Annette was predeceased by her parents, Thomas (“Jack”) and Pearl (Gatewood) Carter; and brother, Thomas (“Buster”) Carter. She also was predeceased by her husband, Charles D. (“Smitty”) Smith, whom she married in Fredericksburg on August 3, 1960; and their infant daughter, J. Meredith Smith.

She is survived by her sister, Lillian G. Price, Spotsylvania, Virginia; her son, Donald R. Smith and wife, Brandi, Woodford, Virginia; her grandchildren: Donald N. Smith and partner, Claire, of Norfolk, Virginia; and Landon C. L. Smith, and Payson C. E. Smith of Woodford, Virginia; nieces Lisa Eads and husband, Terry, Richmond, Virginia; and Tammy Price, Spotsylvania, Virginia, and their families; and sisters-in law Joyce Carter, Woodford, Virginia; and Carolyn Dooley, The Villages, Florida, and her family.

Annette was a native of Caroline County and a member of the Spotsylvania Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Besides her roles as daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, etc., she held roles as a beautician, an in-home caregiver, and positions in hotels, with Paul's Bakery, and with General Products for over 20 years. Annette was devoted to her faith but was happiest when spending time with her family. She gained satisfaction caring for and doing things for her family members. Annette immensely enjoyed all three of her grandchildren. Though she loved being playful with her younger grandchildren, she had a special bond with her firstborn grandchild. With deep pride, she watched him grow into adulthood and enter military service. Annette was also close to her son and her nieces.

Annette also had a passion for country cooking and country music, especially listening to her husband play and sing; shopping; and cats. For holiday celebrations, Annette could always be found dressed to the nines.

A celebration of Annette's life will be held at a later date. "

Services will be announced at a later date.

"To all of Annette's family: Though your loss is heartbreaking, it is comforting to know Annette is no longer suffering. Her smile and joy will live on within you. I see pieces of Annette's personality in her son, Donald. She will live forever in him. Some of the things I will remember most about Annette are how she beamed when talking about her family, especially her firstborn grandson; how she enjoyed playing games and dancing with her youngest grandchildren; how she always had to be sure everybody ate, but she didn't eat; our family trip to Great Wolf Lodge; and how she made sure she told all of us she loved us every time she talked to or saw us, memories I will always cherish. May you find peace and comfort in your beautiful memories of Annette. Sarah Veach”
