Life story

"Carol was born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia. She touched the lives of so many people during her lifetime. She worked in the GEM Store when she was younger, before meeting the love of her life and starting her family at a young age. While raising her three kids (Tommy, Missy, & Cindy), she "babysat" for many others; she probably helped raise 50 different kids at her home over the years. She enjoyed helping customers at a cake & candy supply store, sharing tips of how she made her own amazing sweets. Her kids always enjoyed a special custom cake for birthdays. She was known for baking cookies and making chocolates for family and friends. Carol was a long-time member of the Dale City Arts & Crafts Club and made many wonderful "stitch & bitch" and bunco friends. She & Winston relocated to North Carolina in 2005. Together they celebrated over 59 years of marriage. It was a blessing to anyone who witnessed their love for each other and their dedication to their vows. Carol LOVED listening to Blake Shelton. She loved going to the beach. She loved her cats. Most of all, she loved her family. Oh, how she loved her family! She loved family dinners, family reunions, family holidays. Family is everything.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Nora & Norman Marks, and her siblings: Norma Jean Beard, Willard Marks, Joyce Vroom.
She is survived by her husband, Winston, of Vanceboro, NC; her sister, Lois (Bill) Jones of Alexandria, VA; her children George Tommy Self of Fredericksburg, VA; Melissa (Todd) Whisnant of New Bern, NC; Cynthia (Rick) Birzack of New Bern, NC; her grandchildren: Cristina Myslinski, Sean Self, Ariel Birzack, Kayla Self, Allen Birzack, Colby Whisnant; her great-grandchildren: Taylor, Colton, Marleigh, Lincoln, Olivia, Lexie, Raegan. She will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know her. "
