Life story

" LaVerne Cecilia Marie (Shrader) Koczot, passed away peacefully at the home of her son, Paul, in Spotsylvania, VA on November 22, 2023.

“Vern” was born in Detroit MI, June 9, 1934. After her marriage to Frank in 1956, they relocated in 1960 to the Maryland/DC area, where Frank was stationed at Walter Reed Medical Center. They made their permanent home and raised three children in Wheaton, MD. Vern’s life included, volunteering in her children’s activities, volunteering at the local Catholic Church, working in banking, supporting her growing family while maintaining strong ties with the Detroit clan, and participating in many social activities with her friends who had become like family.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn “Kate” Koczot; two sons, Michael (Katie) and Paul (Malissa) Koczot; three grandchildren, Crystal Wherrity (Ryan), Emily and Sean Koczot; two great grandchildren, Charlotte Kirchgessner and Emmett Wherrity; a sister, Kathleen “Kathy” Downs (Richard); and many nieces and nephews.

Vern was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank.

A Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 15663 Norbeck Blvd, Silver Spring, MD 20906, on Monday, January 15, 2024 at 10:30 am, Eastern Standard Time. Inurnment is at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring MD.
