Life story

" Shirley Crockett (Dean), 79, of Akron, OH went home to be with her Heavenly Father on August 17th, 2023. Shirley was born on May 5th, 1944 to Herron and Mary Dean in Parrish, Alabama.



After Shirley graduated from Parrish High School, she went on to study Social Work at Tuskegee University and continued her education at Fordham University where she earned a Master’s and a Doctorate in Social Work.



In 1974, Shirley met John Crockett and they went on to have children, Tesha and John.



After graduating, she started working at Catholic Service League where she kickstarted a 30-year career in social work and teaching, which eventually lead to a private practice. Shirley was passionate about working with children and helping every child reach their full potential.



In 2014, Shirley retired and relocated to Virginia to spend more time with her children and grandchildren.



Shirley was a devoted Christian and loved the lord. She was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She was passionate about education and giving back to her community. Shirley loved to sing and dance, was always the life of the party, and had an undeniable light-hearted laugh that could bring joy to any room.



Shirley was predeceased by her parents: Mary and Herron Dean, Sister Claudia Potts, and Brothers: Charles Dean and Herron Dean.

She is survived by her children, Daughter Tesha Crockett-Gibson (Duane) and John Jerron Samuel Crockett (Kathryne). Along with grandsons, Gabriel Crockett and Elijah Crockett, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.



Instead of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Alzheimer's Association, an organization Shirley was passionate about.
