Susan Lucille Shanley, age 82, passed on May 4, 2023, in Richmond, Texas.

Susan is survived by her daughter, Patricia Susanne Richards; her son-in-law, Paul Richards; her brother, Michael E. Fleck; her brother, Timothy W. Fleck, and her other ‘daughter’, Helen Brouillette.

She is preceded in death by her sister, Kathryn Patti Ternus, and her brother, Charles W. Fleck IV. Susan was born on October 12, 1940, in Houston, Texas to parents Charles W. Fleck III and Helen Broussard.

She attended St. Anne’s Catholic School from 1947-1955. She graduated from Marian High School with the class of 1958.

She graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science degree. She studied Minerology at Colorado School of Mines and studied Astronomy at San Diego State University. She won a Natural Science Foundation Grant to continue studies in Geology at Florida State. She went on to earn a Master of Science and, in 1980, a Master in Education from Texas A&M University.

Susan began teaching middle school and eventually high school at Stratford High School in Spring Branch ISD. During her 35 years of teaching, she taught nearly all the sciences, her favorites being Geology, Astronomy, and Marine Science.

Susan enjoyed summers in Garner State Park, dancing, and playing cards. She was skilled in sewing and quilting, as well as painting.

A memorial service will be held at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Houston, Texas for family and friends. Her final resting place will be with her family at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
