Life story

" Leroy Arthur Butler Jr., was born on August 11, 1947 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Butler Sr.

Leroy was a proud Washingtonian, born and raised in Washington, DC NE. Leroy received all of his education in the Washington DC public school system and in 1965 he graduated from McKinley Tech High School. Shortly after graduating, Leroy entered into the military and joined the United States Navy, serving 4 years. After completing his tour of duty, Leroy wanted to further his education, so he enrolled and began attending University of the District of Columbia. As we all know, Leroy was a hardworking man and while in school, he started his printing career and began working at the Government Printing Office (GPO).

In February 1970, Leroy Jr. married Betty Barnett Butler and in 1977 from that union, Leroy Butler III was born. From the moment that Leroy III was born, it was evident that Leroy was a proud and devoted father. After giving birth, Betty suffered from some health issues and Leroy immediately kicked into gear becoming the loving and nurturing caregiver that their newborn needed. A little later, when Leroy III was a young boy, he played football and Leroy Jr. loved to cheer and coach his son, from the sidelines. There was not a game, that Leroy missed.

In the late 1980’s Leroy met Saundra Womack and they married in 1991. In 1990 their oldest daughter, LaToshia was born. And soon afterwards in 1993, they had their second daughter, LaKellia. Leroy’s legacy of being a devoted and loving father continued with his two precious daughters. He was always involved in their academics, including one time when he rushed home to watch Mars with LaToshia on her new telescope set. When he wasn’t helping them learn, he was helping them grow with his good “ole” corn chipped beef breakfast.

In the mid to late 1990’s Leroy worked for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). During his 20 years there before retiring, Leroy made many friends and lifelong connections, one special connection in particular was when Leroy met the woman that he would spend the rest of his life with, Jackie Rouse. Leroy and Jackie, married in Hawaii in January 2004. Leroy became the proud stepfather, of his two adult bonus children, Chavaughn Jones Black and Angela Laster. For most of their marriage, Leroy, and Jackie lived in Dumfries VA in an active adult senior community. They enjoyed spending time with family, traveling and taking RV trips with their RV buddies. Boy did Leroy love his precious RV.

During the Covid pandemic, Leroy decided enough was enough and after many printing careers, Leroy’s final retirement was in 2020 from Knowles Printing in Kensington Md.

Leroy was a loving, caring, and strong-willed man who always spoke his mind while giving great advice, often using humor to get his point across. Everyone that knew Leroy also knew that he took pride in his appearance and he was always a “dapper” dresser and his hats were a vital part of his own personal style. He loved to listen to good music, especially his old school jams while sitting in his “man-cave”.

Although Leroy was a strong-willed and courageous man, he succumbed to his battle with cancer on January 10, 2023.

Free from pain and sorrow the good lord set him free and gave him rest!

Leroy is survived by his wife, Jackie; his son, Leroy; his two daughters, LaToshia, LaKellia; his two bonus daughters, Chavaughn (a.k.a Munchie) & Angie; his ten grandchildren, Xavier, Christian, Laniya, Lauryn, Quincy, Ayden, Joshua, Caleb, Matthew, and Amelia; his one great granddaughter, Olivian; his sister Celestine Randall; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends and relatives who will miss him dearly.
