Life story

" On December 1st, 2022, Sandra Pendleton, nee Mack (Sandy), passed away peacefully after a prolonged battle with kidney failure. Sandy fought long and hard to remain here on earth with her five beautiful grandchildren, but she now watches over them from heaven. She was 72 years old.

Born September 25th, 1950, in Arlington, VA, Sandy was a native and lifelong resident of Northern Virginia, growing up in Vienna, VA, with her parents, Neil and Mary and two sisters, Caroline and Stephanie. A 1968 graduate of Madison HS in Vienna, Sandy would also raise her own sons, Brian Pendleton and Philip Pendleton in Vienna.

Sandy had a long and varied professional career in financial services, but her longest tenure was her 26-years at Navy Federal Credit Union, from which she retired in 2015. Sandy was a friendly and generous colleague who forged many strong relationships over her career. She was always very proud of the work she did in every role at NFCU to support its military members and their families.

Every day, Sandy was generous and loving to those around her. Her family and circle of dear friends could count on her to be there for them when needed. Whether with a hug, a smile, a bit of wisdom or some other measure of assistance -- even one of her famous pot roast and mashed potato dinners (smoothest you’ve ever eaten) -- Sandy was always willing and seemed to know exactly how to make the day brighter.

Sandy loved her pets and advocated for all manner of animals and wildlife. Over the years there were many beloved household pets, always treated like royalty and spoiled to a fault. Honorable mentions, just to name a few: doggies Robbie, Mo and Sydney, kitties Fred, Ted, Maggie, Jack and Jill.

Though her health was failing over her final years, Sandy found joy and happiness in her grandchildren. She most enjoyed spoiling them with gifts and treats, delighting in their big smiles and warm snuggles. Each of her grandchildren had a very special and loving relationship with their grandmother. Sandy focused on making each of them feel like the most special child in the world.

Sandy is survived by her sons, Brian and Philip, as well as her five grandchildren (the apples of her eye): Connor, Adeline, Oliver, Elizabeth and Benjamin. She was pre-deceased by her Mother and Father, Mary and Neil, as well as her sisters, Stephanie and Caroline.

A private memorial service will be held, and her ashes scattered at a later date. Per Sandy’s wishes, in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Humane Society of Fairfax County or Old Dominion Humane Society (Fredericksburg, VA).
