Life story
"Mrs. Phyllis Jean Hughes Yoder, 86, of Hickory passed away Friday, July 15, 2022, surrounded by her family, following a period of declining health. Mrs. Yoder was born March 9, 1936 in Richmond County, GA to the late John Hartwell Hughes and Lola Fleming Hughes. She was a charter member at Faith Community Church. She was also a long time member of Waldensian Presbyterian Church, where her and husband Glenn, served faithfully for many years as a Sunday School Teacher, Leader of Youth, Youth Advisor, active in the Women of the Church, and served on many other church committees. Mrs. Yoder was a teacher for Burke County Public Schools at Valdese Elementary, Hildebran Elementary, and George Hildebran Elementary. As an educator, she loved her students and cared about their educational and physical wellbeing. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Ray Yoder. Survivors include two daughters, Lola Renee Yoder of Hickory, and Kymberly Pennington and husband Dean of Hickory; sister, Carolyn Murphy of Hickory; grandchildren, Alexis Pennington, Abby Pennington, Benjamin Pennington, and Brayden Pennington; two nieces, Cyndy Hollowman and husband Reggie, and Patti Arrants and husband Toni; and cousin, Marvin Brown. A private family graveside service will be held 1:00PM Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at the Waldensian Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Rev. Kyle Canerday officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Faith Community Church at 2670 Shady Grove Rd, Connelly Springs, NC 28612
