Life story

"Joseph Norman Newton, 86, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of the late Margaret Marlene Newton, passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2021. The Funeral Service will be Friday, May 21, 2021 in First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant, 681 McCants Drive at 11 AM. Interment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 20, 2021 between the hours of 6 and 8 PM at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel. Norman was born July 21, 1934 in Denmark, South Carolina, a son of the late John Heyward Newton and Roberta Staley Newton. He was a US Navy Veteran serving as a radio operator for two years. Norman was a longtime faithful and dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant. He retired from The Post and Courier after many years of loyal employment. Norman was a loving husband, father, grandfather, Papa and friend. Surviving are four sons, Joseph Joey Newton, Jr. (Betty), John Johnny Newton (Alice), Troy Newton (Stacey) and Loren Newton (Beth) all of Mt Pleasant, SC; nine grandchildren: Sarah, Danica, John, Olivia, Isabelle, Carrie Lynn, Emma, Maggie and Kassie; two sisters, Thelma Newton McCarthy and Rachel Newton Broome, and one brother, Robert Matthew Newton (Gail). In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lorenne Newton Jefferson and brother, James Morris Newton. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 681 McCants Drive, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
