Life story

" Monica Alexandria Slack (England), 55, passed away on April 27, 2019 at Pelican Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Maurice, Louisiana. For over ten years, Monica bravely faced Huntington's disease and handled its debilitating results with tenacity and grace. Thankfully, she is now liberated from this disease and rests in a deep and profound state of peace.

Monica was born February 1, 1964 in Englewood, NJ. The oldest of three, she grew up in the Township of Washington, NJ where she met many of her dearest lifelong friends. She attended and graduated from Westwood High School where she enjoyed playing the flute for the school band. In 1990, she earned a BA in Business Management from William Paterson University and was immediately employed by UPS but soon realized that she had another calling.

Monica decided to become a nurse and in 1996 she graduated from Dominican College in Orangeburg, New York on the Dean’s list and a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and RN license. Monica’s first nursing job was at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut in the Surgical Unit and Surgical Stepdown Unit before moving to New York where she worked at North Shore University Hospital on the front lines as a trauma nurse. In 2000, Monica moved to Manhattan continuing her specialization as a trauma nurse at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital Center. September 11, 2001 was Monica’s scheduled day off but after seeing the news that morning she threw on her scrubs and headed to New York-Presbyterian ready to do whatever was needed eventually working with the Burn Team at Weill Cornell Burn Center. This team was acknowledged in the book “Love, Greg and Lauren” by Greg Manning, who chronicled his wife’s recovery from burns that covered over 82% of her body. He offers a very special thanks to the burn nurses naming all of them individually, including “Monica England”, writing that their dedication and compassion made his wife’s survival possible.

In the summer of 2002, Monica met a transplanted Southerner living in New York and the two began dating; often spending hours in conversation, enjoying each other’s company and developing a wonderful relationship. The two eloped to the Virgin Islands and on September 30, 2004 Monica married Bain Slack in St. John at Sundown on Turtle Bay. The couple moved to Atlanta, GA and after about a year into their marriage they got news that a third would be joining them. On June 22, 2006, Kate was born and the new parents both completely fell in love. Family was very important to Monica and she loved being a mother to her little “Sweetpea” who was the light of her life.

Monica was a very kind and caring woman who deeply loved her family and friends. Energetic and outgoing she always had a smile on her face and was ready for a hug whenever greeting or saying farewell to the people in her life. She was passionate about animals, supported the ASPCA and often had a dog at her side on her daily 3-5-mile runs. Monica enjoyed listening to music and loved to go to live shows when possible. She would watch NFL football on Sundays and was a fan of the New York Giants. Her laughter was loud and hard and could often be heard from a distance because she never held it back. It didn’t matter if it was a good comedy, a bad joke or just plain silliness, Monica loved to laugh and it was infectious to those who loved her.

Monica will be missed intently and fondly by her husband, Bain Slack and their daughter Katherine Alexandria Slack; her mother Alexandria Marie Read; her sister Michelle England and her children Joseph and Nicole Genatempo. She was predeceased by her father, Thomas Sergi, Sr. and her brother, Thomas Sergi, Jr. Monica will remain in the hearts of many uncles, aunts, cousins, in-laws, extended family and close friends (including “the girls”) who dearly loved her.

Friends and family can pay their respects at the memorial service on Saturday, June 1 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 174 Church St., Grand Coteau, Louisiana, 70541. A reception will follow at the Sunset Community Center, 108 Leo Richard Ln, Sunset, LA 70584.

We would like to thank everyone at Camelot of Crowley Nursing Home and at Pelican Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation for the dedicated and compassionate care provided for Monica and the wonderful support for our family. That support helped Monica’s family gain a much needed victory from a disease that routinely devastates and tears apart the family it touches.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations in Monica's memory be made to the Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA.org). "
