John Leslie Wentz died on August 9, 2026, in Culpeper, Virginia. He was 91. His son David was with him.
He was born in Baltimore City in 1934, to Leslie Lee Wentz and Hilda Wolf. His mother's family called him Winky, and it stuck. He was of the Jewish faith.
He earned his master's degree from the University of Maryland and went on to spend his career as an Electro-Optics engineer for Westinghouse Defense and Aerospace. He was the kind of man who took things apart to see how they worked, and he never really stopped. There was always something on the workbench.
He loved the water. Fishing, crabbing - that's where he was happiest. And for years he had his golden retriever, Moses, who was rarely far from his side.
He leaves behind his four children - David, Debbie Wilson, Karen Geppi, and Michael - and three granddaughters, Hannah, Leah, and Sarah.
He didn't want a service. He asked to be cremated, and we're honoring that. "
