Life story

" Patsy Barnes Johnson, 79, passed away peacefully at her home in Fredericksburg, Virginia, on July 14, 2026. Born on October 31, 1946, in Lexington, Kentucky, she lived a life defined by faith, devotion, resilience, and a deep commitment to caring for others.

The first in her family to earn a degree, Patsy graduated from the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in 1968. Her nursing career spanned hospital care, home health, pediatrics, and oncology. She served during the height of the AIDS epidemic with unwavering compassion, offering dignity and courage to patients facing fear and isolation. Throughout her career, she cared for every person with the steadiness, skill, and kindness that shaped her life.

Outside of nursing, Patsy found joy in bowling leagues, weekly card games, and the friendships that meant so much to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Mary Barnes; her in‑laws, Aubrey and Barbara Johnson; her brothers‑in‑law Marshall “Junior” Reynolds and Brian Helmus; and her daughter‑in‑law Curtina “Nina” Johnson.

Patsy is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jeffrey Johnson; her sons, Jeffrey Johnson and Jason (Jarman Fagalde’) Johnson; her sisters Carlene Reynolds and Kathy (Harold) Elliott; her brother William “Billy” (Charlotte) Barnes; her sister‑in‑law Jill Helmus; and her five grandchildren: Dorothy “Grace” Whitney, Ben Johnson, Julian Johnson, Sera Johnson, and Lucien Johnson.

Known for her gentle humor, generosity, and welcoming spirit, Patsy leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will continue through her family and all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Arrangements are under the care of Virginia Cremation Service, with a memorial service to be held at a later date."
