Life story

" Thomas (Tom) J. McCormick, 70, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2026.

Tom is survived by his wife, Jaynelynn McCormick; his three children, Kristen (Fred) Delasobera, Timothy (Melissa) McCormick, and Kelsey McCormick; and his five grandchildren, Nicolas Delasobera, Mila Delasobera, Sloan McCormick, Timothy McCormick II, and Olivia McCormick.

Tom was born on December 30, 1955, in New Rochelle, NY, to John F. and Theresa (O'Donnell) McCormick. He grew up in New Rochelle and graduated from Iona Preparatory in 1973. He went on to play football at Iona University, where he was named captain of the 1977 team. He was later inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame along with the 1977 undefeated team and coach.

Following his graduation from Iona, Tom followed in his father's footsteps into the field of law enforcement, eventually joining the United States Secret Service in 1983. He began as a Special Agent in the New York Field Office (1983–1992), then relocated to Washington, D.C., where he was selected for the Presidential Protective Division (1992–1995). During this time, photos can be found of Tom running alongside President Clinton on one of the president's famous jogging sessions. From there Thomas was selected to the Counter Assault Team (CAT), a specialized tactical unit within the Special Operations Division that supports the Presidential Protection Detail. These teams are highly trained and must meet strict physical, medical and background requirements. Also having to complete
specialized training, consisting of counter-ambush tactics, close quarters combat, weapons handling and decision-making under extreme pressure. He then served in the Financial Crimes Division (1995–2000) before bringing his years of experience to the Secret Service Training Division, where, as Assistant Special Agent in Charge, he trained the next generation of agents at the James J. Rowley Training Center (2000–2003). He spent his final years of service in the Washington Field Office, retiring in 2003 as Deputy Assistant Director. He forever cherished his time with the United States Secret Service.

Tom then moved into the private sector, working for GE Capital at their headquarters in Stamford, CT. After his time there, he returned to the D.C. area and re-entered law enforcement, serving the Department of Homeland Security as an ICE agent before retiring.

Outside of his service to his country, family and friends were the most important things to Tom. He always prioritized his children's sporting events and milestones and never missed an opportunity to have flowers and cards ready for his wife on any special occasion. Tom found great joy in time spent at the beach, in physical fitness—jogging and lifting weights among his favorites—and in throwing a
pass or catching a ball with his grandchildren.

A mass will be held on Thursday May 21 st at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Clifton, VA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Iona Prep Football team in Thomas’ memory.

Tom will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. "
