Life story
" Betty Sue Hopkins, born Betty Sue Collins, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of March 15, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with lung and heart disease. She was 79 years old.
Born and raised near Big Stone Gap, Virginia, Betty carried the spirit of her Appalachian roots with her everywhere she went. Life eventually led her to southern Maryland and then to Fredericksburg, Virginia, where she had her son, and remained until her death.
Betty dedicated years of her life to caring for others as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Mary Washington Hospital. It was there, on the delivery floor, that she was gifted one of her most treasured memories — giving her granddaughter Lauren her very first bath. It was a story she retold with unmistakable pride, and one that perfectly captured who she was: a woman whose greatest joy was being present for the people she loved. She later served the children of Fredericksburg as a school bus driver, and few things brightened her day more than running into one of her former students out in the community, a testimony to the lasting impression she left on those around her.
Above all else, Betty lived for her family. Her son Scott was the light of her life, and she treasured every moment spent with her granddaughter Lauren and her great-granddaughter Sadie Faye.
Betty is survived by her son, Scott; her granddaughter, Lauren; her great-granddaughter, Sadie Faye; her brothers, Tommy and Robert; her sister, Judy; her niece, Sandra; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Phyllis and Peggy; her mother, Violet; and her father, Paul.
Betty Hopkins was a caregiver, a nurturer, and a constant presence of love in the lives of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
