Life story
" James Arnold Brown was born on March 3, 1938, in Kentucky, the oldest of six children. When his family moved to Columbus, Ohio, Jim stepped into a leadership role at a young age. He left school early to help support his family, working in coal mines, steel mills, and wherever work could be found. His sense of responsibility and determination were evident even as a boy.
At 16, with his mother’s consent, Jim enlisted early in the United States Marine Corps, beginning his lifelong connection to San Diego. In 1956, he reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and was later stationed at Camp Pendleton. During his service, Jim operated an amphibious tractor. While in San Diego, he attended a USO dance where he met Cayla Carlson. It was love at first sight. They married in 1960 and began a life together rooted in devotion and partnership.
After leaving the Marine Corps, Jim joined General Dynamics’ Convair Division. Over a distinguished career, he served as a reproduction technician, lead manager, and group manager. He held a Top Secret security clearance and dedicated himself to his work until his retirement in 1994.
Jim was a devoted husband who lovingly cared for Cayla during her 20-year battle with Parkinson’s disease until her passing in 2009. His loyalty and steadfast love defined him.
In retirement, Jim devoted himself to his family, friends, and his faith in Christ. He was an avid reader of Western novels, a spirited slot machine enthusiast, Friday card player, and a gifted storyteller whose laughter filled any room. He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, and his presence will be deeply missed.
Jim is survived by his two sons, Brent (w:Marjorie) and Brian Brown (w: Brittany); four grandchildren, Madeleine (h: Lukas), Brewer, Lyanna, and Kristopher; and his brother, Danny (w:Mary) Brown.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on March 6 at 10:00 a.m. at Clairemont Lutheran Church, 4271 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., San Diego, California. Reception to follow. "
