Life story

" Mary Jane (Custer) Powers, 89, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026, in Ruther Glen, Virginia, with her family by her side.

Born on December 22, 1936, in Pennsylvania, Mary was the beloved daughter of Mary Elizabeth Custer and Lester Earl Custer. Throughout her life, Mary was known for her kindness, deep faith, and her love of playing cards with family and friends.

She is survived by Mary E. (Thomas) Bowman, Lewis Thomas, Dolores J. (Thomas) Kulynych, Kathy L. Powers, and Bobbie L. (Powers) Lawrence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Powers, and her son, Robert Matthew Thomas.

Mary was a proud grandmother to nine grandchildren and a loving great-grandmother to eleven great-grandchildren.

She was laid to rest in Florence, South Carolina, beside her husband.

Mary’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
