Life story
" Nancy J. Gruitt, 72, of Rapidan, Virginia, passed away at her home on January 21,
2026, with her husband by her side, after a fierce but short battle with cancer. She was
born on March 2, 1953, in Washington D.C. at Sibley hospital to Jean (Jackson)
Vendemia and Marvin Jackson.

38 years of marriage. Their life together was marked by deep love, shared service, and
unwavering devotion to one another.
Nancy was a proud mother to three sons (from a previous marriage): Neal, Anthony and
Jeremy Collier. Family meant everything to her, and she found her greatest joy in being
a mother and grandmother.
Nancy dedicated much of her professional life to public service. She retired from the
Prince William County Police Department in 2017. Her career with the County began as
a part-time Crossing Guard and evolved into a full-time civilian position in the Records
Bureau as an Administrative Assistant. Nancy was a highly respected and valued
member of the department, known for her strong work ethic, kindness, and willingness
to always go the extra mile for her coworkers. She was deeply passionate about the law
enforcement community – a calling she shared with her husband, Bob, a retired
Sergeant of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department.
After retirement, Nancy and Bob, moved to Rapidan, Virginia where they continued their
commitment to service by volunteering with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department,
TRIAD program, providing services to Orange County residents with special needs.
Nancy was also a devoted animal lover, especially of her beloved Yorkies. She rescued
several yorkies over the years and poured her heart into caring for them. In her quieter
moments, Nancy was an incredibly talented crafter, creating beautiful handmade items
that reflected her creativity and attention to detail.
Nancy is survived by her loving husband, Bob Gruitt; her sons Neal (Amy), Anthony
(Paige) and Jeremy (Jessica); her cherished fifteen grandchildren, as well as two
sisters; Judy Holwegner, and Suzanne Barb, and two brothers; Aubrey and Mark
