Life story

" William Lee Sherman, 85 years old, passed away peacefully at his home in King George, VA surrounded by family on January 15, 2026.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Rose Sherman, his daughter Deborah Sherman Westcott and his brother Robert Sherman. He is survived by his wife April Johansen, his first wife Sharon Sherman, their son William Sherman (Jayne), grandchildren Tyler Sherman, Ashley Westcott Santo (Mike), Erika Westcott Merkowski (Mike), Nicholas Sherman, and soon to be 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Marsha Harting and Patricia Sherman.

Bill was born on February 21, 1940 in Van Wert, OH and enlisted in the Navy after High School. He dedicated over 20 years to the U. S. Navy and was extremely proud of his military service. Much of his military career was spent at sea including controlling aircraft aboard the USS Forrestal (CVA-59).

After retiring from the Navy, Bill worked for various contractors utilizing his naval background for the safety and advancement of air control systems and to design and test combat systems for AEGIS class cruisers and destroyers.

When his work career ended, Bill volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Burlington, NJ until moving to Virginia in 2002. Bill enjoyed working with his hands on construction projects building decks, finishing basements and installing wood and tile floors. In his leisure time and younger days, Bill enjoyed playing golf, softball, bowling, fishing and gardening.

As was his wish, he will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dementia Society of America or Lewy Body Dementia Association. "
