Life story

"Douglas William Hugo, who was born and raised in Norfolk, attended Norview High School, Chowan University, and the Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on January 18, 2026.

He was preceded in death by parents, Francis and Betty Hugo; sisters, Betty Jo McMullen and Jean Francis; and his beloved wife of 57 years, Grace Cockman Hugo. He is survived by children Timothy Hugo (Paula), Lisa Hugo, and Stacey Mansfield (Trey); eight grandchildren.

A devoted member of the Norview and Kempsville Lions Clubs, Doug lived a life anchored in service, friendship, and community. Whether on the golf course, the racquetball court, or cheering for his favorite NASCAR drivers, he shared his dry wit and easy warmth with everyone he met. He had a gift for turning strangers into friends and friends into lifelong companions. His FROGS (Falls Run Old Golfers) will miss him dearly at the 19th hole.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life from 1–3 PM on February 21 at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Chesapeake Chapel on Battlefield Blvd. A private interment will be held at a later date at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk.
