Life story

" Lewis Wilbur “Rob” Robinson III
(June 21, 1962 – December 29, 2025)

Lewis Wilbur “Rob” Robinson III was known for his gruff exterior, but those who truly knew him understood that beneath it was a deeply genuine and caring heart. He was outgoing and knew no strangers, quickly turning any gathering into a room full of friends. Loud, witty, and often the life of the party, Rob was quick with a joke or one of his many well-loved catchphrases, all delivered in his unmistakable deep, booming voice. His sharp sense of humor and unapologetic authenticity made him unforgettable. Rob took immense pride in everything he did, with an immaculate attention to detail that reflected his strong work ethic and personal standards.

Above all, he was wholly himself—unfiltered, sincere, and deeply devoted to those he loved.

Rob was born on June 21, 1962, in Detroit, Michigan, to Carol (Sartor) Moisides and Lewis Wilbur Robinson Jr. His childhood was spent between Miami, Florida, and Detroit, Michigan. In early adulthood, Rob moved to Arizona to be near his brother, Rick. While living there, he met his future wife and the love of his life, Gwen, at the convenience store where she worked. Rob and Gwen later moved briefly to Michigan and Ohio before settling in Virginia, where they raised their three daughters.

Rob and Gwen shared a love built on partnership, humor, unwavering devotion and the occasional sarcastic remark. They loved being surrounded by family and friends and spending quiet evenings watching television side by side. Rob and Gwen shared a deep bond and a life filled with laughter, love, and very spoiled pets.

Rob worked for many years as a conventional machinist, specializing in custom fabrication and die and cast work. Through dedication and skill, he advanced to shop foreman and eventually became the owner of RBM Machine, LLC, in Sterling, Virginia. In addition to metal fabrication, Rob had a strong interest in firearms and World War II aircraft. He built detailed custom models of several planes, which were proudly displayed in his “man cave.”

Rob found his greatest joy in being surrounded by the people he loved—sharing laughter, stories, and time together. Whether hosting, gathering, or simply showing up, Rob valued those relationships above all else and made sure the people in his life always knew they mattered.

Rob was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Wilbur Robinson Jr. (Essih), and his sister, Mary Ellen McConnell. He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn; his three daughters, Nicole (Kurtis) Hollins, Melinda (Jonn) DeMain, and Dawn (James) Key; his granddaughters, Kelci, Karaline, and Maxcine; and his grandsons, Christien, Oliver, and Jonn. He is also survived by his mother, Carol Sartor Moisides; his brother, Rick (Debbie) Robinson; his sister, Tara Robinson Rockney; and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life for Rob will be held on February 21, 2026, at the Glenkirk Estates Clubhouse from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Family and friends are welcome to stop by at any time to share memories, stories, and love in honor of Rob. "
