Life story

" Carol Jeanne Barlow Woehr Arney passed into the loving arms of Jesus on January 7, 2026, at her daughter’s home near Warranton, VA. Though limited by dementia, she was blessed with the same gentle spirit that endeared her to those around her
throughout her life.
She was born on May 10, 1930, and raised on a pinto bean farm near Cajone, CO.
During her high school years in Phoenix, AZ, she transformed from a shy country girl to a polished young lady, ready for Los Angeles, CA. There she married Robert C. Woehr, the father of her three children. Finding herself widowed at age 30, she remarried, and was adored by Raymond J. Arney, the father of her last two children.
After raising her children as a keeper at home, the greatest change came into her life:
she began to tutor reading under Frank Lang in Chattanooga, TN. Mrs. Arney, as her
students called her, taught thousands of children and adults to read. After seven years
with Dr. Lang, she joined her daughter, Gail, in Greenville, SC, to open a tutoring office.
She then taught for ten years on her own in the home of Terri, her daughter near
Warrenton, VA.
In 2005, Mrs. Arney asked her daughter, Dr. Gail Everett, to apply for nonprofit status for their tutoring program, and STRIDES Tutoring was established to serve thousands of low-income families of Greenville, SC. She purchased a home where the Main Office of STRIDES was permanently housed because she “didn’t want to commute, just walk downstairs” to her desk. She taught 15 years there, 5 yrs of that with dementia, before spending her last years in VA under the care of her faithful daughter, Terri.
Mrs. Arney is survived by five children, Dr. Gail Everett (Gene), Terri Brown (Mark), Dr. David Woehr (Vicki), Tim Arney (Denise), and Tom Arney. Also surviving are 13
grandchildren: Chris Everett, Frances McKeague (Michael), David Everett (Jordan),
Heather Hubbard (TJ), Aaron Brown, Tyler Brown (Alexis), Sally Brown, David Woehr
(Brannon), Alexander Woehr (Carmen), Nathan Woehr, Jessica Mattison (Luke), Leah
Vergith (Dylan), and Jason (Brooke ) Arney. Also surviving are 14 great-grandchildren:
Elizabeth McKeague, Emily McKeague, Richard McKeague, Anastasia Hubbard, James Hubbard, Zoe Everett, Ava Everett, Vanessa Everett, Maggie Everett, (Little) Mark Brown, Luna Brown, Sunny Brown, Rory Sullivan, and Quinn Mattison. She was
preceded in death by her parents, Buck and Blanche Barlow, her sister, Joyce Pontius,
and her two husbands, Bob Woehr and Ray Arney.
The memorial service will be April 25, 11am, at Mountain Bridge Bible Fellowship.
Pastor Kevin Boling, her last and most honored pastor, presiding. Donations may be
made to her passion: the nonprofit charity, STRIDES Tutoring, providing reading and
math tutoring to children in poverty. "
