Life story

"Dorothy H Descano, 68, of Spotsylvania Va. passed away on December 20, 2025 after a short, brave battle with cancer. Beloved wife of husband Stephen, she was the devoted mother of Stephen Descano Jr. (Ryanne) and Nicole Jinier (Matthew). She was the doting Mimi to granddaughters Katherine-Elizabeth Jinier and Charlotte Rose Descano, and will be greatly missed by brothers Theodore Szymendera (Marie) and Robert Szymendera (Barbara) along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.


Dorothy was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and spent much of her adult life in Hockessin, Delaware, where she lovingly raised her family. She built a distinguished career as a Senior Human Resources Professional, earning her Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification, and held leadership roles with Wilmington Trust Bank and later the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Philadelphia. In 2013 she moved to Virginia and started a successful business, Paragon Autism Services, with her daughter Nicole. She stepped back from daily business responsibilities following a debilitating stroke in 2021, but Dorothy's strong will and stamina allowed her to regain much of what the stroke took from her. She continued to take part in strategic business decisions until her cancer diagnosis shortly before her death. She accepted her diagnosis with equanimity and courage, and the manner in which she faced death was an inspiration to all who witnessed. Her wit, wisdom, courage and great love will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to know her
