Life story

"Walter Ray Grove of Somerville passed away on December 24, 2025, just two months shy of his 98th birthday.  Walter was the son of the late Lloyd and Mary Grove.  He was predeceased by his wife, Elva Goff Grove; his son, Robert (Bobby) Grove; his brothers, Lambert, Arthur, and Willie Grove; and his sisters, Evelyn Huffman, Eleanor Coppage, Helen Ruffner, and Jeanette Miller.

Born on the family farm, White Ridge, Walter was a farmer and merchant, following in the footsteps of his father.  Grove's Store has been in the family since 1908 and White Ridge Farm was recently recognized as a Virginia Century Farm.  Walter also drove a school bus for Fauquier County for 23 years. His father started driving the bus in 1928 when it was a horse drawn wagon school bus.  Walter also served on the Board of Directors of NOVEC for over 38 years, a job of which he was very proud.  During his tenure, he served as secretary, treasurer, and vice-chairman.  He remembered, as a student, having to do homework by kerosene lamp and was very happy, when, in 1941, electricity reached Somerville and he was able to do homework by electric light. As a Director, he represented NOVEC at the 4-H Livestock Sales in Fauquier, Stafford, and Loudoun counties.  Walter was a strong supporter of 4-H and appreciated that, through NOVEC's support, many 4-Hers were able to help fund their college dreams.

Walter loved sports – especially playing baseball as a young man.  He and his brother Willie even tried out for the New York Giants baseball team, but they didn't quite make the cut.   Walter said he didn't have enough arm and Willie was too small. Their trip home from tryouts included a train ride, a bus ride, and then a five mile walk home from Elk Run. When able, He would travel to Griffith Stadium for a Senators game He also loved bowling and playing croquet.  Many late nights were spent arguing over a particular play on the croquet court.  Walter loved watching professional sports, as well.  An avid Washington Redskins fan, he would watch and rewatch John Riggins and the Hogs, or any pro baseball or basketball game that was on TV.

Survivors include daughter, Donna Grove; son, Thomas Grove; granddaughters, Jennifer Porter and Caitlin Menefee (Earl); great-grandchildren, Alex and Jake Porter, and Ella Menefee; and a large extended family.

If you wish to do so, memorial contributions may be made to, Heartland Hospice, 493 Blackwell Rd, Suite 319, Warrenton, VA  20186."
