Life story

" On August 5, 2025, Rick Sgarlato rode off into the sunset after a life lived at full gallop. The world is a bit dimmer without him. He was surrounded by family and love, he lived boldly, laughed often, and left behind a legacy of fearlessness, deep compassion, and an indomitable belief in people. He was the "BEST in the business".

He is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn; children Dru-Ann (Dale) and Paul Andrew (Amy); grandsons Andrew Hoover (Rebecca), Justin Dunn, Devin Dunn, and Vincent Sgarlato; and great-grandchildren Anastasia Hazen and Woodrow Hoover.

A successful businessman with degrees after his name (MBA, CHFC, CLU), Rick built much more than a career; he built a life for himself and his family that was full of stories, adventure, and meaning. A lifelong horse fanatic, Rick claimed to have been born next to a jockey in a New York hospital and admired horses for their grace, strength, and spirit, qualities he carried with him every day.

Rick came from a different era. One where honesty mattered more than polish, and kindness was non-negotiable. He was generous in spirit, once quite literally giving the coat off his back. He believed deeply in the goodness of people and never judged. He had a gift for making you feel like the most important person in the world and making you feel seen. He lived in the moment, loved without conditions, and stood proudly by a simple personal policy: “Love everybody.”

In his final years, Rick was kept laughing. and (mostly) out of trouble, by his loyal entourage: Tameka, Karen, and Mary, who cared for him with deep warmth, loyalty, and heart. He was a legend and one of a kind. They don’t make them like Rick anymore. We’re all better off for having had him in our lives. He didn’t wait for life to slow down. He grabbed the reins and lived for the day. The trail he leaves behind is one we’re proud to follow.

The family plans a small, private remembrance to be held later in the year. In lieu of flowers, they respectfully request donations on Rick’s behalf to the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation: https://trfinc.org/.
