Life story
" It is with great sorrow, but deep gratitude for her life, that we announce the passing of Mary G. Glass July 26, 2025. Mary, at the age of 90, passed with her daughter Melanie by her side and her entire family in her heart. Predeceased by her husband Melvin, daughter Elizabeth Anne Collingwood Leo, and parents James and Annie (Giammittorio) Giuseppe, Mary is survived by her brother George Giuseppe, her daughter Melanie, numerous nieces and nephews, and by her seven grandchildren: Braedon, Blaire, Brooke, Baylor, Bryce, Berkeley, and Noah.
Mary graduated from George Washington High School in Alexandria, VA in 1953, soon beginning her career in the Alexandria General District Court. Through her hard work and dedication, Mary took on several promotional roles in her career, eventually being appointed Clerk of the Alexandria General District Court. There, Mary served the public alongside her staff to manage court records, process legal documents, and prepare the daily docket of court proceedings, trials, and hearings, for the judges. During her career, Mary received the Liberty Bell award: recognizing the exceptional service of a non-lawyer citizen whose dedication of time and energy has helped strengthen the American system of freedom under law in keeping with the spirit of our Constitution. The Supreme Court of Virginia, judges, and lawyers alike praised Mary’s dedication and extraordinary service. Mary was a vital link between the public and the court until her retirement in 2003 after 50 extraordinary years of dedicated public service.
As much as Mary achieved and enjoyed her career with the court, she adored her role as “Mia” to her seven grandchildren. Whether she was cheering them on at concerts and sports, cooking meals, making lunches, or shopping for their back-to-school needs, Mary was a constant loving presence and pillar of support in her grandchildren’s lives. Mia’s lasting impact on her grandchildren will continue to keep her spirit alive, and she will be remembered through the family’s love of Italian cuisine including pizzelles, cruella, and puffs! Simply being around her family brought Mary immense purpose and joy, for which her grandchildren will be forever grateful.
