Life story
" Our family’s fiery red headed matriarch, Alice Gale Knighton Tingler Boston, a beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and soon to be a great grandmother, passed away surrounded by friends and family, peacefully on Sunday June 8th, 2025, at the age of 71 in Locust Grove Virginia. She lost her battle with small cell lung cancer. Born in Covington VA, she spent most of her life working as a Certified Nursing Assistant for Carriage Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation in Fredericksburg Virginia, only later to retire with her loving sisters in the Clearwater Florida area.
She is survived by her children, Shannon G. Fugate & Stuart G. Tingler; son-in-law Lonnie D. Fugate; her grandchildren, Lonnie E. Fugate & Gillian N. Fugate; Sisters Deborah Jones, Rita Knighton, Carolyn Sizemore. Nephews: Richard G. Tingler, Derek Belton, Dustin Nicely, Shane Jones, and Chad Sizemore. Nieces, Lisa Sullivan, Michelle Belton, Kimberlie Travis Olivarez, Danielle Nicely, Melissa Way, and Heather Sizemore. She was predeceased by her father Harry Stuart Knighton, mother Irene Doris Meadows, and sisters Gloria Jean Belton Knighton, Tina Marie Knighton, and nephew Spec. Roger L. Belton Jr.
She prided herself on being a caregiver to her family and would do anything for anyone she loved.
Her love for porch sitting was unmatched but only when it was above 72 degrees. Stephen King was her favorite author, and she loved to sit and read. If it was too cold outside, she could be found lounging in the recliner watching Dr. Phil, Bravo, or TLC, she told us she liked to watch these shows because they confirmed “no one in life knows what they are doing, and everyone is just winging it” and “no amount of money can give you class if you have none.” A huge Matt Rife Fan she loved standup comedy, and her sense of humor was on point. Her favorite phrase when calling you out was “Ahhh-Bullshittt.”
Shortly after her cancer diagnosis she came to live with Shannon and her family back in Virginia. Her goal was quality of life over quantity. Let the fun begin she said as she purchased a power scooter. Proud of her nondriver reputation she had no problems bouncing off walls, doors, and running over your feet. Her party girl reputation was quickly established in the Dominican Republic, and she rightfully earned the nickname of Grandma Nubbins while teaching her grandkids how to do shots in the party pool. She did come with a warning label like Gizmo from the Gremlins, do not get wet with Rum and Coke. When the beach and sand was not available you could find her in the SXS with her kids riding the mountains of Hatfield McCoy trails. She enjoyed sporting events, casinos, and any new adventure you invited her too. She declared that “God better give her back her leg when she gets to heaven.” We can only hope God was blasting Bob Seger’s Old Time Rock & Roll as she danced through the pearly gates. We are grateful for the time and experiences we got with you Mom, we love you and you will be dearly missed.
A celebration of life will be announced on a later date to be held at Mobile Bay Alabama, in Spring of 2026. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Cancer Society.
