Life story

"Lucy Mae Walters, 85, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.

Born in Harleyville, she was the daughter of Flossie Williams Walters and John Middleton Walters. Her love of sports, especially basketball, was nurtured in her hometown. Lucy was the youngest and last surviving offspring of 11 children.

She is survived by her partner of 40 years, Kay Friddle, many nieces and nephews, who were all her “favorites”, and her adopted family, Mindy Friddle (Mike), Kendall Friddle Neason, and Katie Friddle Marlowe (Jason), six grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Lucy, affectionately known as Lulu, graduated from Winthrop College and taught middle school physical education. She was one of the first women to officiate women’s college basketball. She spent many summers working at Keystone Camp in North Carolina. Lucy never met a stranger and always stayed in touch with friends.

Lucy was an active and beloved member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church. She ushered for many years, served on the vestry and various committees.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s on June 14, 2025, at 11:00 am. Her cremated remains will be entombed in the church columbarium. "
