Life story

" Gary K. Ward was born in Passaic, NJ on July 21, 1955 as the second son of Margaret Jacqueline (Oliver) Ward and George John Ward III. When he was two years old the family moved to St. Thomas, V.I. and then on to San Juan Puerto Rico.
He completed his schooling in San Juan and attended InterAmerican University where he majored in Political Science. Following graduation he moved to the Washington, DC area to attend law school. He received his JD from Howard Law School in 1980.
Gary did not feel the call to practice law, he wanted to focus on international affairs. His love of travel, his fluency of Spanish, his love of politics all contributed to the next phase of his life.
He started working at the Caribbean Council and then moved on to working in the Public Affairs office of the EEOC under now Justice Clarence Thomas.
In 1985 he was selected to work as Chief of Staff in the Office of the Secretary at the US Department of Housing and Urban Development as a political appointee.
During this time he had two sons, Christopher (Dee) Ward and Alejandro T. (Evelyn) Ward. In 1989 he moved to the US Department of Energy, Office of International Affairs.
There Gary created a program with the international representatives from the Caribbean, South America and Central America. He was very successful as he spoke Spanish. He built numerous coalitions within the countries and the United States government.
Eventually he was named the Director of International Affairs Department. This included the Southern Cone countries as well as Canada and Mexico. He traveled to a majority of the countries in the region and reported directly to the Secretary of Energy.
He was a natural for the position and enjoyed bringing private sector companies and government entities together to buy and sell products, exchange information, and make government policies.
In 1991 he married Jane (Richmond) Ward.
Together they had two sons, Bill D. (Savannah) Ward and George J. Ward IV.
Gary will always be remembered for getting things done, his high energy, his laughter and his love of travel, family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Jane, four sons and two granddaughters, Ariana and Alejandra.
