Life story
" Paul Richard Croll of Fredericksburg, VA passed away on November 11, 2024 at the age of 78. Paul had overcome many medical-related obstacles throughout his life. This last hurdle was something he sadly could not recover from, as his ailments were just too severe. Paul put up a truly admirable fight up until the very end. Paul was continually surrounded by his family and friends all the days leading up to his peaceful departure from this Earth.
Paul was born in 1946 and grew up in Bronx, NY. Paul’s parents Samuel and Cecile Croll led by example with their strong work ethic and family values. As Paul first embarked on his academic journey, it was clear that he was destined for success. Paul was invited to apply to the Bronx Highschool of Science due to both his accelerated and exemplary academic progression. After taking the required 3-hour SHSAT (Special High School Admissions Test), he was accepted. Some of the school’s notable alumni include 8 Nobel laureates and 8 Pulitzer Prize winners! After graduation, Paul went on to earn multiple college degrees including a B.A. in Psychology from Hunter College and a Masters in Systems Engineering from George Mason University. Additionally, he attended Florida State University on a research fellowship and headed up “Project Know How”, an equality-driven home builder initiative. Paul also served in the United States Air Force for a 4-year term.
Paul had quite an accomplished career with over 35 years’ experience in mission-critical systems and software engineering. Paul retired as a Computer Sciences Corporation Fellow, where he conducted research on cybersecurity, systems/software engineering processes, and process improvement. In 2012, Paul was the recipient of the prestigious Hans Karlsson Award and in 2018, the IEEE Association’s Standards Medallion. He chaired the Software and Systems Engineering Standards Committee, maintaining the largest collection of software and systems engineering standards in the world.
Paul was a connoisseur of multi-cultural cuisine and was not afraid to try even the most outrageous of foods. He was an amazingly talented chef and quite innovative in the kitchen. When it came to hobbies, Paul’s main passion was photography. He was an avid lover of nature’s wonderous landscapes and had a talent for capturing their essence through the lens of his camera. Paul was very well-traveled and his photographs allowed for us to share in many of his remarkable adventures.
Paul is survived by his Wife (Carolanne Croll), his Son (Cameron Croll), his Daughter (Courtney Croll Sutphin), and his Brother (Mitchell Croll). Paul also leaves behind Daughter-in-law (Allison Croll), Son-in-law (Brandon Sutphin), and his four beloved grandchildren (Olivia Croll, Lucas Sutphin, Lincoln Croll, and Jonah Sutphin).
Paul Croll undeniably enriched the lives of those around him. He was a loving son and supportive brother. He was an inspiring colleague and reliable friend. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband proud father, and adoring grandfather. Paul Croll leaves behind a beautiful legacy and we are forever blessed having shared in his truly remarkable life.
Per his request, Paul was cremated and will have a beautiful memorial wall plaque made in his honor. No formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers, our family would love for you to make a donation in Paul’s memory to the local Animal Shelter (SPCA).
