Life story
"Francis Howard Kowalski, 83, a dedicated family man and United States Air Force veteran, passed away peacefully at his home in Spotsylvania. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1941 to Thaddeus and Sarah (Easton) Kowalski, Francis grew up as an only child in the city he cherished.
Francis served his country proudly in the Air Force from June 1963 to June 1969. After his service, he resumed his work at Sears in Philadelphia, where he worked as a catalog order buyer. In 1988, he relocated with his family to Chicago when Sears moved its catalog operations, showing his steadfast dedication to his career. Upon retirement, Francis settled in Virginia, drawn there by the desire to be closer to his loved ones.
In his spare time, Francis enjoyed reading about history and trains, a passion that he shared with family and friends alike. He was known for making the best chocolate chip cookies for his grandchildren, a tradition they will fondly remember. Retirement afforded him the opportunity to relax with his favorite history books, work part-time as a driver for Schneider, and keep in touch with lifelong friends he cherished from Pennsylvania.
Francis is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria; his daughters, Kimberly Smith (James) and Jacquelyn Singer; and his cherished grandchildren: Trey Smith, Justice Smith, Kaleb Smith, Jenika Singer, Jayla Singer, David Ruth, Woodrow Bearden IV, Candias Bearden, and Jasmine Bearden. He was a loving uncle to his nieces and nephews and a dear friend to many who remained close through the years. Francis was preceded in death by his son, Woodrow Bearden III.
Francis’s legacy is one of loyalty and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him."

"I first met Frank when I became a Sears Toy buyer in 1970. He was always willing to answer the new guy's questions. Frank has a great sense of humor and some quirky ways. I lost track of him, after the Sears collapse. Years later, after we retired to Fla, I was given his email and telephone number. We connected again. We both shared the love of our country and we both had similar senses of humor. We emailed each other 4 or 5 times a week. I, for one, will miss you, Killer!”
