Life story

"Bernadine Kay Colligan lost a hard fought battle with lung cancer on Tuesday, October 8th, 2024. She was a devoted mother to her daughter, Valerie Whiteside, who will miss her every day. Bernadine, or Bernie as she was known, was preceded in death by her parents John Whiteside and Anne Taylor Whiteside, as well as her brother Terry Whiteside in 2013. Bernie lived and worked in Arlington, VA for most of her life, retiring from Arlington Co. Department of Taxation. In the early 2000’s she fought a battle with throat cancer and was blessed to overcome that illness. After beating throat cancer she moved with her brother to Sarasota, FL, which she absolutely loved. She moved back to VA several years ago to be with her daughter Valerie in Colonial Beach. In addition to Valerie, Bernadine is also survived by her nephew, Terrence Whiteside of Lusby, MD and cousin Tommy Taylor of Bealeton, VA. Bernadine wished not to have a funeral, and instead expressed that she wants her ashes taken back to Sarasota for final placement, which her family will respect. "
