Life story

"Marcell James Pierce, or “Cello” as many family and friends called him, was born on December 8th 1988, in Chicago, Illinois, to an already growing family of six siblings — little did he know there would eventually be thirteen in total. His father, Collins Pierce, a Navy veteran, and his mother, Joyce Funches, a clerk at the time, raised him with love, strength, and values that would shape who he became.

One word to describe Marcell is ambitious. Growing up, he always wanted to overachieve and rise above his upbringing, despite the hardships and challenges he faced early on. He had a deep love for comic books, music, and cars, and even learned to play the guitar thanks to his dad’s influence.

High school wasn’t easy for Marcell. He faced many obstacles and found himself in tough situations, but his determination to find a better path led him to enlist in the U.S. Army at the young age of 18. He served his country proudly for six years before being discharged due to a severe hand injury.

After his service, Marcell built a beautiful life. He married Jade Pierce and became a proud father to his daughter, McKenzie Pierce, who was the light of his life.

Marcell was bright — he could light up a room with his energy and presence. One memory that stands out is the time he stopped the entire house from fighting by simply cooking dinner and bringing everyone together. That was who Marcell was: a peacemaker, a unifier, and someone whose love ran deep.

He had a heart of gold and loved helping others, especially the youth. And yes, he could be tough sometimes — but those who knew him best understood that his rough edges came from a place of strength and experience.

Tragically, Marcell was involved in a car accident that left him on life support. For nearly eight months, he fought bravely before his family made the difficult decision to let him transition to the next life in peace. On September 28th, 2025, Marcell was called home, surrounded by love and family.

Marcell was 36 years old. He leaves behind his loving wife, Jade, his beautiful daughter, McKenzie, and his mother, Joyce Funches. He is preceded in death by his father, Collins Pierce.

A private service for immediate family will be held on October 8th, 2025, with funeral services from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

Marcell “Cello” Pierce will forever be remembered for his love, loyalty, and laughter — a true soldier, husband, father, brother, and friend whose spirit will live on in all of us."
