Life story

" Stephen John Becker (84) passed away peacefully on July 23, 2024, with family by his side.

Steve (lovingly referred to as Pop Pop) is survived by his children Michael Becker (Loretta), Laurie Harper, Kathleen Richards (Mike), Sue Ellen Frederick (Tom), and his companion Ellen Schwartz. He is also survived by his brother Jerry Becker (Georgia), his sister Joyce Carroll, sister-in-law Carol Becker, nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren (with another on the way in August), and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his wife of 54 years, Ellen Nierle Becker, his parents Clarence and Anna Mae Becker, his brother Bill Becker, and his nephew Billy Becker.

Upon graduating from high school in Pennsylvania, he signed up for the volunteer draft and was assigned to an Army Reserve unit for five years. Steve began his early career in Pennsylvania as an Insurance Investigator for Bethlehem Steel, and Fruehauf Corporation where he dealt with safety, security, and training.

He and his family moved to Culpeper, VA in 1976 where he worked for the Rochester Corporation, Jefferson Savings and Loan, and Klockner Pentaplast in their Human Resources departments.

In his retirement he remained active going to the gym, reading books on history and mountain lore, spending time with his extended family, and driving his 1954 Chevy. Steve loved classic cars, and mountain music. He made musical instruments called Stumpf Fiddles and enjoyed playing them and the guitar.

Steve was a generous and kind man with a great sense of humor, and he will be greatly missed. His family will cherish the memories of the many family trips to the Outer Banks, and the accompanying trips with the kids to the Red’s Army and Navy store.

A private graveside service will be held later.

Services will be announced at a later date.
