Life story
" Steven Douglas Dutton went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 13, 2024. He was born in December, 1957, in Bristol, TN, to Wallace and Loveda Dutton. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Jessie Tenpenny, and stepmother Lilly Dutton.
Steve grew up in Bristol, VA, and was a graduate of John Battle High School (class of 1976), where he played football. With a sharp mind, Steve began a career in computer hardware and moved to northeast Virginia. He married the love of his life, Mary Toomey, on August 28, 1993. Steve was a pillar in his communities of Fairfax, Virginia, where he lived and worked for 37 years, and Mineral, Virginia, where he spent weekends at the lake with family and friends, served faithfully as a member of Louisa Baptist Church, New Life Community Church and enjoyed retirement with his sweetheart.
Steve’s life was marked by unmatched generosity, steadfastness, and unconditional love. He had a superpower to ignite joy, laughter, curiosity and fun wherever and whenever he walked into a room. Every relationship with Steve was significant, whether brief or life -long. All of his family cherish countless memories that are far too numerous to recount. Steve was also an accomplished craftsman who could solve any problem or tackle any project, as evidenced by his numerous home renovations, his various construction projects in support of Christian ministries and camps, and even through laying the foundations of church buildings in Brazil. Most of all, Steve’s greatest priority in life was following Jesus and honoring God. His faith was an encouragement to all those around him from a young age and throughout his life.
Steve battled hard for his last few years to spend as much time as possible with those he loved. Now his battle is over. Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints” (ESV). Steve passed into eternity surrounded by family who were holding each other tightly, just as the Father was holding Steve tightly, welcoming His precious son home. No doubt he was greeted with the refrain of 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (NKJV). He will be greatly missed.
Steve is survived by his wife, Mary Dutton; older brother Jack (Karen) Dutton; older brother Dennis (Jenny) Dutton; step-son Xandu (Theresa) Toomey; step-daughter Dana (Ernie) Painter; grandchildren Logan Roberts, Kelan, and Paige Toomey (to whom he was known by one of his most esteemed titles, Grandpa); and several special nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Mother Teresa once shared, “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.” Steve embodied this ideal every day of his life. He changed the world around him by loving his family and friends. Thank you for changing our worlds, Steve.
The family will plan a Celebration of Life service for a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to River Valley Ranch, 4443 Grave Run Road, Manchester, MD 21102, or to the charity of your choice. "
Services will be announced at a later date.

"Mary, I just got the devastating news last night. I have a very difficult time to believe that Steve is gone! Tammy and I, offer our deepest condolence to you and your family. Steve will always live in my memory. I will never forget the time we spent together and of course the projects we worked together at Data General. I will never forget the sleepless nights we endured, full of stress, to meet unbelievable deadlines. Steve was my ROCK. I would get reassurance and energy by looking at his full of intelligence, full of honesty, piercing eyes and disarming and calming smile. He would tell me, “Don’t worry Tom, we’ll get it done!”. When our team was down, he would crack a joke and make everyone lough! Steve will be greatly missed not only by his family and friends but the whole world. He proved from his actions that he was the kind of person that makes a real difference. Steve, my friend, may your Creator rest your soul.”
